01474 Stamp Collecting

Boy Scout Stamp Collecting Badge

Stamps are so much more then little sticky pieces or paper that you buy to send card and letters, pay your bills or ship a fruit cake to your loved ones. They are encyclopedia of knowledge and lessons in history waiting to be discovered.

Major events, places and people of interest, leaders of industry, nation, art and innovation are represented on postage stamps. Collecting them is only a part of the fun. Learning about the stamps, how they came about and the history depicted on them is actually a big part of the hobby for many people. Anyone can collect stamps but most collectors not only accumulate them, during their course in the hobby, they learn about them. While not a requirement it just seems to happen.

Before you know it, you are a wiz at Jeopardy and Cash Cab!

I've included this section to not only provide the basics of stamp subject history, but to also enlighten the beginner as to the events leading up to or encompassing society when the issue was released. I could easily turn this into a history Web site but would rather concentrate on the collecting end.

Explore the menu at the top right to discover the history of the Stamp, U.S. Post Office, U.S. Presidents, U.S. and World Events time-line, a Stamp Subject Directory and more. This site predominately deals with collecting U.S. stamps so most of the historical content is related to the United States and its history. There is a brief world events timeline and where applicable non-US subjects are discussed in relation to U.S. stamp issues.

Links to many of these pages are also included on the individual stamp issue pages. Likewise you'll find links at the bottom of each subject page listing the stamp issues which that particular subject is depicted on.

If you don't see what you're looking for or expected to see, drop us a note and if we can we'll try to include it with future updates.
